Corey, may I ask how you were able to satisfy the work experience requirement to become a full MTA member? I was told that you have to work for a professional financial services firm. Is this not true? If so, how could you, as an independent trader (not managing other people's money), qualify for full membership and thus the CMT?

Thanks for your advice.

CJ,

You need to be an affiliate member (anyone can sign up) and pay dues to participate in the CMT program (exams/study) but to get your CMT officially, you have to be a full member.

Full membership requires three sponsors familiar with your work and a 5 year (3 years with completion of 3 exams) 'active in technical analysis' requirement.

To be a member of the MTA, you don't have to take the CMT coursework, but to hold a CMT charter, you have to be a full (and sponsored) member of the MTA.

Austin,

The MTA is probably the most recognized world-wide, yes, though the International Federation of Technical Analysts is perhaps more active outside the USA (I'm not familiar yet with IFTA).

In the message boards/study groups (for the CMT at the MTA website), there were people from all around the world - Asia, a couple from Australia, UK, India, Egypt - and those were just the study partners I remember!
