Dave: Thank you for the comment.

I started by ... well, not writing down a lot, and then hand-annotating charts (which was a pain, but it built my skills), then editing charts each evening and keeping tons of files, then tried Excel, went back to charts, then created my own input screens, which were decorated Excel charts. Anyway, I use a combination of my online files and mandatory Excel trade entry sheets now. I tend to get behind and compile everything on the weekend when there's less pressure.

The techniques I am illustrating - they are general market behaviors and not really specific strategies. I am not afraid about giving away my secrets - though I of course keep some things to myself, but only because I feel like it is too complicated to explain or wouldn't make sense to someone else. I am trying to keep this blog more about education and strategies, rather than an arena to post my private trades, but I'm sure I will when one of them illustrates a major point (or I see a major situation setting up).

In terms of automatic tracking, I have seen some neat applications/files in Excel that do amazing things, yet I get too bogged down with the many features to find them successful for me. Keeping it simple helps. Breaking down trades into separate categories (type, market background, reason) helps keep the data organized. It may also be helpful to separate losing trades further into "market action" and "trading error (personal)". You can never help market action, but you can try to identify recurring patterns in your trading that can only be realized when you line up all your errors and spend a few hours categorizing and studying them.

Nice post. I have gone from 'blogging' my journal, to using an Excel workbook, to -now- a good old fashioned datebook. I'm wondering what everyone else is using, and why. I found having an online blog made me paranoid about others picking up my techniques, negative comments from Aholes where just irritating to deal with, and my cpa and wife were both really uncomfortable with my posts outlining my techniques and picks. Excel didn't have the flexibility to adjust to the 3 techniques I use (everyday's worksheet had to be re-formatted to allow profit tracking, etc). Writing my trades in my datebook allows flexibility; yet, I cannot automatically track my numbers/progress. I'd love to hear what everyone else uses, why, and direction towards an application mentioned.
