Which Stocks Actually Increased Today? And Which Ones Declined the Most?

Feb 3, 2014: 6:14 PM CST

On a day where roughly 485 of the 500 S&P 500 stocks declined on the session, let’s take a quick look at these rogue names that bucked the broad selling pressure today.

The following warrior stocks actually advanced on today’s 40 point rout (325 Dow Points):

S&P 500 SPX Stocks that Advanced Today

I arranged the stocks by Sector – note that two sectors saw no stocks with gains (Energy and Staples).

The biggest sector leader – not surprisingly – was the defensive Utilities sector with six stocks advancing today against a tide of selling.

Consumer Discretionary – with many more stocks in it than the Utilities sector – saw five stocks advancing..

The Data are from TradeStation and pulled into Excel for a cleaner presentation.

While these 18 names – including the “barely positive” – fought the trend, let’s now focus our attention on those stocks that declined the most on a day of harsh, impulsive selling.

These “relative strength laggards” – at least as defined by single day performance – may garner the attention of aggressive short-selling traders:

I selected the “Top 5 Worst Performers” by sector during today’s session.

I won’t comment on each sector, but will only let the stock names stand on their own with respect to how much they declined in a single session.

As with any simple scanning method, these names can give you additional trading candidates that may not show up on more complex scan lists.
